WHAT IS ACID REFLUX



  • If you are suffering from burning sensation in your abdomen, throat and chest, bloating and dysphagia, you might be suffering from acid reflux disease.


What is an acid reflux?

  • Acid reflux is a disease in which stomach content moves up into the esophagus 
  • It is also known as gastroesophageal reflux or heartburn.


Normal anatomy of the stomach


  • At the outset of the stomach there is a sphincter known as the lower esophageal sphincter.
  • As food enters from esophagus to your stomach this sphincter closes up, it prevents the backflow of stomach's acid and other components  
  • In acid reflux disease this sphincter doesn't close properly due to which acid produced by the stomach travels up and causes heartburn.
  • You can also suffer from chest discomfort.
  • If this happens for more than 2 times in a week it means you might be suffering from GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease)
  • If this starts occurring  frequently you can suffer from serious complications.


Symptoms of acid reflux

  • Heartburn - it is a burning sensation which person feels in his chest, throat or stomach.
  • Bitter and acidic taste 
  • Bloating- it is a stipulation in which your belly becomes swollen  
  • Bloody vomiting -occurs due to tear in esophagus lining or some other underlying disease 
  • Wheezing 
  • Dry cough 
  • It can even lead to respiratory troubles such as asthma and chronic cough.


Conditions which increase the risk factors of GERD

  • Obesity-obesity is the major cause of heartburn
  • Thyroid-people suffering from hypothyroidism have the propensity to become obese it accelerates the chances of acid reflux.
  • Pregnancy-during the first trimester of your pregnancy esophagus pushes food very slowly into your abdomen so that the nutrients get absorbed at a higher rate but it can cause exaggerated symptoms of acid reflux.
  • A connective tissue disorder like scleroderma it is a type of disease which mostly strikes women, in this disease your skin, joints and muscle becomes tight and stiff.


Other risk factors

  • Eating a heavy meal, lying down immediately after eating 
  • Eating just before sleeping 
  • Smoking 
  • Boozing  
  • Taking NSAID'S(Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • Taking thyroid, blood pressure medications 
  • Eating fried and oily food - it relaxes lower esophageal sphincter, which makes more acid to travel back into the throat  
  • PCOD(Polycystic ovarian disorder)
  • Anxiety


Difference between GERD and HEARTBURN 

  • Heartburn is the most common symptom of acid reflux 
  • It is a condition in which you experience a burning sensation in your chest, throat and abdomen  
  • GERD also called as gastro esophageal reflux disease, it is a disorder which happens when you suffer from acid reflux for more than twice a week.

  • Loosen your clothes immediately 
  • Amalgamate baking soda and water, it counteracts the acid  
  • Ginger - it prevents the acid from going up in the esophagus
  • Licorice supplements- it increases the mucus lining of the esophagus and prevents it damage
